Law has shaped societies, systems of justice and governance for a very long time. The LLB and LLM are among its most popular degrees, and they differ in purpose, focus, admission, career opportunities and depth of study.

LLB

The LLB is a three-year undergraduate degree covering seven core modules: criminal law, contract law, constitutional or administrative law, equity and trusts, land law, tort law and EU law, plus optional modules. It is the qualifying law degree for England and Wales. If you already have a law degree from your home country, you may be exempt, although this is not always the case. Universities: The University of Law, King’s College London, Coventry University, University of Hertfordshire, University of Birmingham and University of Glasgow. Fees range from £18,000 to £35,000 per year.

LLM

An LLM is a postgraduate degree that lets you specialise in a particular legal field. Many LLM courses UK programmes accept applicants with a law degree, although some courses have different entry requirements. Universities: University of Strathclyde, King’s College London, QMUL, University of Greenwich and University of Nottingham. Fees range from £18,000 to £38,000.

In short, an LLB suits students beginning their legal education, while an LLM suits graduates seeking advanced or specialised legal knowledge. When you compare LLM courses UK wide, check each course’s entry requirements first.

Medicine and Healthcare Management

Medicine and Healthcare Management are two different healthcare pathways. Medicine focuses on diagnosing, treating and preventing illnesses, while Healthcare Management focuses on managing hospitals, healthcare organisations, staff, budgets and services, and entry requirements and career paths differ significantly. Undergraduate medical degrees in the UK generally take five to six years, depending on the programme and whether it includes an additional year of study. Demand for healthcare management professionals is rising significantly because of ageing populations and the need for system transformation. Universities include QMUL, University of Greenwich, University of Glasgow, University of Birmingham and University of Exeter. Fees range from £23,000 to £33,000.

Architecture and Urban Design

If you enjoy designing buildings, planning cities and creating sustainable living spaces, architecture courses UK universities offer may be a great fit. Architecture focuses mainly on the design, function, safety and appearance of individual buildings, while Urban Design looks at how buildings, streets, public spaces and neighbourhoods work together to create better cities. Graduates may become urban designers, architectural assistants, sustainable design consultants, urban planning specialists or design researchers.

To become a registered architect in the UK, check the current requirements of the Architects Registration Board (ARB), as an architecture-related master’s degree alone does not automatically qualify you. So whichever of the architecture courses UK wide you choose, check this early. Universities include University of Brighton, University of Edinburgh, University of Strathclyde, University of Manchester, University of Hertfordshire and University of Nottingham. Fees range from £18,000 to £34,000.

Media, Communications and Journalism

Universities offering environmental science courses UK wide include Keele University, University of Glasgow, King’s College London, University of Edinburgh, University of Bath and University of Strathclyde. Fees range from £18,000 to £39,000.

Factors to Consider When Choosing

There is a saying, ‘follow your passion,’ which is inspiring, but incomplete. It would be remiss of us not to forewarn you that a waning interest in a subject can cause you to disengage and even consider dropping out of the course. Not only is this action detrimental to your resume, but it also adversely impacts your well-being.

It is therefore advisable to select a course that turns your passion into a fulfilling and rewarding career track.

Choosing the right course depends on several considerations:

University Ranking and Accreditation

First, check that the university can legally award UK degrees, as employers or other universities may not accept a degree that is not officially recognised. In England, look for the institution on the Office for Students (OfS) Register or the qualification on the list of recognised awards. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own government lists of recognised bodies.

In England, the OfS runs the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), which rates providers Gold, Silver, Bronze or Requires improvement. The Office for Students (OfS) has published the results of the 2023 TEF, in September 2023 which is the first time universities have been rated on their teaching quality since 2019.

This year’s TEF includes 128 higher education institutions, the majority with university status. Some 37 received a gold rating, 79 got silver and 11 institutions received a bronze rating.

Rankings are one input, not the decision. In the QS World University Rankings 2027, Imperial College London is 2nd, the University of Oxford 4th, the University of Cambridge 6th and UCL 8th, but tables can disagree: for Medicine, the Complete University Guide 2027 lists Cambridge first, while the Guardian 2027 (as reported by Imperial) ranks Imperial first.

If you are choosing among engineering courses UK wide, accreditation matters. The Engineering Council keeps a searchable database of degrees accredited by licensed professional engineering institutions, and accreditation decides whether a degree meets the education requirement for Chartered (CEng) or Incorporated (IEng) registration.

Please note: To gain a Chartered Engineer status, one must hold a CEng accredited degree or a degree that is considered a recognised degree to gain CEng status later.  Secondly, MEng is not an integrated degree. It is a master’s level qualification, can also be pursued separately after undergraduate.

Course Fees and Scholarships Available

Cost is often the first practical question when thinking about why study in UK. International students pay fees set by each university, with no national cap, and UK government tuition-fee loans are generally not available to them. Some published international undergraduate fees:

  • Bournemouth University: 2027/28 is between £17,685 and £20,685 for an undergraduate (BA/BSc/BEng) degree
  • University of Oxford: £37,380 to £62,820 per year (2026/27 entry); clinical medicine is significantly higher, and the fee covers university and college.
  • University of Cambridge (2027 entry): Mathematics £34,356; Architecture, Design, Geography and Music £40,296; Medicine and Veterinary Medicine up to £70,554, plus a separate college fee.

So, fees vary widely, from roughly £19,600 to £70,500 a year, and clinical and lab-based courses cost more.

For the Student visa, you must show living-cost funds of £1,529 a month in London and £1,171 outside London, for up to 9 months. For applications made on or after 30 November 2026, these rise to £1,570 and £1,203, making the nine-month maximums £14,130 and £10,827. Funds are generally held for 28 consecutive days, and you must also show unpaid first-year course fees. Students also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge of £776 per year of visa.

From 1 August 2028, English providers will pay an International Student Levy of £925 per international student per year (the first 220 students per provider are exempt). It is charged to the institution, not the student, but may be passed on through fees, so treat it as a possible risk.

  • GREAT Scholarships (India): for 2026–27, 12 postgraduate scholarships, each worth a minimum of £10,000 towards tuition for a one-year postgraduate course, funded jointly by the UK government’s GREAT Britain Campaign, the British Council and participating universities. The 2027 programme covers one-year taught master’s courses only, with £5,000 from the British Council/GREAT and a minimum of £5,000 from the university; check the British Council India page for current award numbers.
  • Chevening: UK government (FCDO)-supported one-year master’s scholarships, typically covering tuition, a monthly stipend and flights, with at least two years (2,800 hours) of work experience required. Deadlines differ by country, so check Chevening’s India page.
  • University merit awards also exist, but they vary by institution.

Career Scope and Salary After Graduation

When exploring why study in UK, it is natural to wonder about job opportunities and earning potential after graduation. According to HESA’s Graduate Outcomes survey for 2023/24, published on 4 June 2026, 57% of graduates reported being in full-time employment around 15 months after graduating, compared with 59% in the previous year.

Of course, salaries and job prospects vary depending on the course, industry, experience and role. The 2022/23 survey reported graduate unemployment rates of 10% for Computing and 8% for Business and Management. So, when choosing the best course for job in UK, it is worth looking at employment prospects alongside potential earnings rather than focusing on salary alone.

The post study work visa UK route, known as the Graduate visa, allows eligible graduates to stay in the UK without needing a job offer when applying. If they wish to stay longer, they may be able to switch to a Skilled Worker visa, which generally requires a job offer from a Home Office-approved employer and a salary that meets the applicable threshold and going rate. The standard salary threshold is £41,700 per year, although some eligible applicants, including those qualifying under the New Entrant route, may be able to meet lower thresholds. As visa rules can change, it is always best to check the latest official UK government guidance before making plans.

How to Apply for These Courses

There is a broad spectrum of popular courses in the U.K. at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. If you’ve just graduated from school, then you can apply for undergraduate courses and if you already have a tertiary degree from your home country, then you qualify to apply for a post-graduate course. While some steps are common to both, the process depends on your answer to the above, so let’s break it down for you accordingly.
  1. Undergraduate students All applications for undergraduate degrees in the U.K., including those received from overseas, are handled through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). The steps are
    • Register an account on the UCAS website.
    • You can select 5 programmes, either at the same university or across your top picks.
    • Fill out your personal information and include previous educational qualifications.
    • Add financial information (i.e., bank statements for proof of funds).
    • Write a personal statement listing your aspirations and motivation behind applying for a particular course.
    • For courses in medicine and law, you may need to take additional tests such as the BMAT and LNAT.
You can save your application and resume it when you have all the information on hand and hit the submit button once you’re fully satisfied.
  2. Post-graduate students The process just requires them to apply directly to the university. Fateh Education’s guidance counsellors can help you plan ahead of deadlines and review documentation with you to ensure that the chosen university receives your application before the submission window ends.
  3. Take English Proficiency Tests:English language proficiency tests are part of the application process for international students. A good score band pushes your application to the top for consideration. Accepted tests include IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge English Exam and in some cases, are waived if the student can provide a Medium of Instruction(MOI) certificate proving schooling and high grades in the English medium.
  4. Make Your Case:A persuasive Personal Statement includes your academic highlights, career aspirations and explanation for your inclination towards a particular course. Ensure to look up sample statements for reference, but write them in your own words for originality.
  5. Make a Documents ChecklistA documents checklist is a comprehensive compilation of all documents that you need to show for your application, such as financial and academic statements. It ensures that important information isn’t unintentionally omitted. Moreover, some documents, such as academic transcripts or degree certificates, need to be sent to you by your college, so make sure to request them ahead of applying for courses in the U.K.
  6. Study Smart, Not Hard:Plan your exam preparation to get the required score for consideration. Devote a few hours daily to studying and practice using mock exams. The latter will give you a better idea of the format and help you time yourself to answer the questions.
  7. Speak with Education Consultants:At Fateh Education, we stay on top of all applications, tracking and helping you manage them. Our comprehensive UK college admissions guide provides step-by-step instructions for international students, covering everything from UCAS applications to visa requirements and essential documentation. You can also get support to apply for your visa once you receive a decision from the university.
  8. Arrange For Accommodation:Make housing arrangements as early as possible once you get an offer to study at university. This will help you find reasonable options within your budget and proximity.
  9. Prepare for Enrollment: Pre-arrival induction programmes differ from university to university. Attending them virtually can help you stay informed of the existing facilities, who to speak to and connect with your course mates even before the course starts. This will help you to live in the U.K. and make the most of your academic journey!

Application Timeline and Documents Needed

Applying to UK universities is structured and transparent. For Indian students, the challenge is usually not eligibility but getting timelines, platforms, documents and academic expectations right. You apply to a specific course at a specific university, not to a university in general.  There are three main intakes for international students: September (Autumn), January (Winter) and May (Spring/Summer). September is the largest, with the widest course selection and the most scholarship options, so plan around it.
  • 12–15 months before intake: research universities, compare courses and check eligibility.
  • 5–8 months before intake: prepare documents, take an English-language test if required, and submit applications.
  • 2–6 months before intake: receive offers, meet any outstanding conditions, arrange finances and pay any required deposit.
  • 1–3 months before intake: get your CAS, apply for the student visa, and arrange accommodation and travel. Timings vary, so allow extra time.
Documents required: a valid passport, academic transcripts and certificates, English-language test results (if required), a personal statement or statement of purpose, letters of recommendation (where required), an updated CV or resume (particularly for postgraduate courses), a portfolio for Architecture and certain creative programmes, work experience documents (if required), and proof of funds and other visa documents.

Post-Study Work Opportunities and the Graduate Route Visa

Staying on after your studies is another big part of the answer to why study in UK. The Graduate Route lets eligible international students stay in the UK after completing an eligible course with a qualifying UK higher education provider, giving you time to look for a job or gain work experience without employer sponsorship. This is the post study work visa UK that so many students ask about.  It is not a work visa that automatically leads to permanent residence. How long you can stay depends on when you apply:
  • Applications made on or before 31 December 2026: eligible graduates can stay for 2 years.
  • Applications made on or after 1 January 2027: the period is 18 months.
  • PhD and other doctoral graduates: 3 years.
You can work in most jobs, look for employment, be self-employed or do voluntary work, but professional sportsperson work is not permitted. The route cannot be extended and does not lead directly to settlement, so to stay longer you must qualify for another route, such as the Skilled Worker visa.
