January 2027 Intake Deadlines Across UK, Ireland, Dubai and New Zealand — And What to Do If You Miss Them

KEY HIGHLIGHTS:

The January 2027 intake is a useful alternative to the September intake, especially for students applying for selected postgraduate and professional courses. However, deadlines vary by country, university and course, so there is no single January intake deadline.

The UK, Ireland, Dubai and New Zealand all offer January or early-year study options, but the intake structure is different. New Zealand's main university intake is generally called Semester 1 and begins in February, while some institutions offer January starts.

If you have missed a deadline, do not assume you have to wait until September. Some universities continue accepting applications while places remain, while others have strict closing dates. Your next step should depend on the course, university, visa timeline and availability.

Introduction

January is a good option if you have found that September does not fit into your schedule at all. This may be due to you having missed the regular deadline, your exam results being announced too late or just because you require some extra time for preparation of your finances. Intake in February in New Zealand or earlier intakes in other countries may provide you with the opportunity of entering college via another path without waiting a whole academic year. However, application to January intake requires some planning, since deadlines may close several months before your study begins, particularly for students from overseas who need a visa.

What Is the January Intake and Who Should Consider It

January intake is another method through which people can join universities. This entry process is normally undertaken at the beginning of the year. The name may vary depending on where one intends to go. It could either be called January intake, winter intake, spring intake, or semester 1 intake. What is important is to verify the actual starting date of the courses and application dates.

To international students, an early year intake may prove handy if one has missed the September or autumn intake period. It would also benefit those who require extra time to finish their bachelor’s degree, manage finances, take an English language exam or prepare visa documents.

However, not all courses have January intakes. Normally, universities have fewer programmes that commence in January as compared to September. This variation is especially true for the undergraduate level. Most postgraduate programs, business degree programs, computing, and management courses have January intakes.

Another point why you have to begin earlier is because the deadline set by the university may not be your actual deadline. An international applicant will still require time for accepting the offer, meeting any conditions, paying the deposit, getting visa documentation, and applying for a student visa.

This will mean that the deadline in November or December will be too late for those who intend to travel in January. For applicants coming from India, it would be wise to reverse-engineer the process beginning from the start date of the course and not the university’s closing date.

UK January 2027 Intake: Deadlines and Universities Open

The UK has a well-established January intake, but it is important to understand that it is not a second version of the September undergraduate intake. January entry is much more common for master’s and selected postgraduate courses.

For undergraduate applicants, the main UCAS deadline of 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time applies to 2027 entry courses that start in the autumn, not to a general January 2027 intake. UCAS says applications received after that date may still be considered if universities have places available.

For students specifically looking for a January 2027 start, university-level deadlines are more relevant.

Northumbria University has published a 30 November 2026 application deadline for its January 2027 postgraduate programmes. The university recommends applying as early as possible and notes that some professional health courses may close earlier because of placement restrictions. It also lists 13 December 2026 as the final deadline for deposit payment for the January intake.

Nottingham Trent University (NTU) has opened applications for January 2027 postgraduate courses. Unlike universities with one fixed closing date, NTU says there are no official application deadlines for its January postgraduate courses, but programmes can close when available places are filled. This is a good example of why students should not wait for a final date before applying.

NTU’s January-start master’s courses include programmes across areas such as business, finance, management and marketing, with courses generally starting on 18 January 2027 unless otherwise stated.

University of Portsmouth has published country-specific deadlines for January 2027 international applications. For applicants from India, the Portsmouth campus deadline for new applications is 30 November 2026, followed by a 14 December deposit deadline and a 21 December deadline for meeting remaining conditions. Its London campus has an earlier 9 November application deadline for Indian applicants.

This is why there is no single answer to the question, “What is the January intake deadline in the UK?” It depends on the university, campus, course and your nationality.

Students should also remember the UK visa timeline. From outside the UK, a Student visa application can be submitted up to six months before the course starts, and GOV.UK says applicants usually receive a decision within three weeks.

For a January 2027 start, waiting until December to begin the visa process is therefore a risky strategy. Your university may have its own CAS deadline even if the course application is technically still open.

Ireland January 2027 Intake: Deadlines and Universities Open

While Ireland provides the option of January admission, the options provided are less compared to the September intake. One needs to consider the particular course as opposed to looking for a list of universities that take all programmes in January.

An example of a university that offers programs in January 2027 is the University of Galway offering MSc International Accounting and Analytics – Pathway B program. This is a seven-month full time Level 9 master’s program that commences in January 2027.

In addition, TU Dublin offers select January 2027 programs. The university has some programs listed on their website where international students can apply in January 2027 and one such program is the Hospitality Management program amongst others. Some of these programs have separate EU/non-EU application processes hence one needs to apply via the individual course page.

Furthermore, there are some select international foundation programs at TU Dublin that allow applications in January 2027.

The main thing to understand about studying in Ireland for Indian students is that there isn’t any universal January intake deadline for the whole country. Every institution/course has its own deadline, which varies between courses, and some may have no January intake at all.

Visa application is another aspect of preparation. According to the Irish Immigration Service, those students who require long-term study visas need to apply three months prior to the arrival date from their home country/country of residence.

Therefore, if you have a course which starts in January 2027, your university application is better to be finished much earlier than December. Otherwise, you will not have enough time to pay fees, collect documents and arrange your visa.

One advantage of choosing Ireland for the January intake is that the timing does not by itself remove access to the country’s graduate immigration route. Eligible graduates can qualify for the Third Level Graduate Programme based on their qualification and other requirements.

A Level 8 award can lead to up to 12 months on Stamp 1G, while an eligible Level 9 or higher award can lead to up to 24 months, initially granted in two 12-month periods subject to the programme conditions.

Dubai/UAE January 2027 Intake: Deadlines and Universities Open

Dubai can be a useful option for students who want more flexibility around start dates. Several universities and international branch campuses offer January or winter starts, although the available programmes vary widely.

At the University of Manchester’s Dubai centre, the Global MBA and Global Executive MBA both have a January 2027 intake. The Global MBA page lists January and July intakes, while the Executive MBA also operates on a January and July cycle.

The American University in Dubai (AUD) also has a Spring 2027 semester beginning on 11 January 2027. Its academic calendar states that early applications for the spring semester are generally accepted through October or November, while late applications can continue through December or January, depending on availability.

Middlesex University Dubai also lists January 2027 as a winter semester period, with teaching commencing in January. The university’s academic calendar shows the winter semester beginning in January 2027.

Dubai is therefore different from the UK and Ireland in one useful way: students can find a broader range of programmes with multiple annual starts, but there is still no single UAE-wide January application deadline.

Some courses can remain open later if seats are available, while competitive programmes may close earlier. Students should also account for the university’s admission process and the time required to complete the student residence visa process after admission.

For students who have missed a UK or Ireland January deadline, Dubai can sometimes provide an alternative early-year start. But the decision should still be based on the course, accreditation, total cost and career plans rather than simply choosing the country because the deadline is later.

New Zealand January 2027 Intake: Deadlines and Universities Open

New Zealand needs a small clarification because its main early-year intake is commonly called Semester 1, and classes generally begin in February rather than January. This is why students searching for a “January intake” in New Zealand will often see the term February intake instead.

The University of Otago, for example, lists Semester 1 2027 as its main February intake. For offshore international students applying for full-degree study, the deadline is 15 November 2026. The university recommends that new international students arrive by 21 February 2027, with Semester 1 teaching beginning on 1 March 2027.

Massey University has a 31 October 2026 deadline for new international students applying for standard qualifications beginning in Semester One 2027. Some selected-entry courses have different deadlines, so applicants need to check the specific programme.

The University of Auckland also uses Semester One rather than calling it a January intake. For international postgraduate applicants, the university states that applications for Semester One 2027 should generally be submitted by 1 December 2026 to allow enough time for visa processing, although individual programmes have different closing dates.

This means students should not search only for “January 2027 intake New Zealand.” Searching for February 2027 intake, Semester 1 2027 and the specific university can produce more accurate results.

Visa timing is especially important for New Zealand. Immigration New Zealand strongly recommends that international students apply for their Student Visa at least three months before their intended travel date. Its latest guidance specifically highlights India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan as markets where students should be particularly careful about applying early.

New Zealand’s current processing data shows universities averaging around 2.5 weeks, with 80% of university student visa applications completed within five weeks in the latest four-week reporting period. These figures can change, particularly during peak periods.

Students should also remember that starting in January or February does not automatically mean they receive a fixed two-year post-study work period. New Zealand’s Post Study Work Visa can last up to three years, depending on the qualification and study completed. Eligible master’s and doctoral graduates who meet the relevant study requirements can receive up to three years.

Month-by-Month Application Timeline to Hit a January 2027 Start

If you are targeting January or February 2027, October 2026 is the point at which your application should already be moving. Students who are still choosing courses at this stage need to shortlist universities quickly.

October 2026: Finalise your destination, course and university shortlist. Check whether the programme actually has a January or February 2027 start and whether international applications are still open. Begin preparing your academic documents, passport, English test score and financial evidence.

November 2026: Submit applications to universities with November deadlines. This is particularly important for UK universities such as Portsmouth and Northumbria and for New Zealand institutions with early international deadlines. If you receive a conditional offer, start clearing the conditions immediately.

December 2026: Complete tuition deposit requirements, receive the final admission documents and prepare your visa application. This is also when late applicants may find that some programmes have already closed.

January 2027: Travel only after completing the relevant visa and university requirements. Some January-start programmes will have induction during the first few weeks of the month, while New Zealand’s main Semester 1 programmes generally begin later in February.

The safest approach is to treat the university deadline as the latest possible date, not the date you should aim for.

Pros and Cons of January Intake vs September Intake

One of the major benefits of the January intake is its flexibility. This way, it means you don’t have to wait a whole year if you have missed September. Those who require extra time for fund raising, taking exams, or making decisions about their future careers can also benefit from January intake.

January intake is likely to give some students an edge over other students due to smaller number of applicants. Nonetheless, admission in such institutions is not easier. It might be true that universities provide fewer places and fewer courses.

Scholarships are the next point of concern. In most cases, the major pool of scholarships is associated with the main intake. Consequently, there might not be every September scholarship available for January intake. Scholarships must be checked on a per university basis.

January intake provides fewer courses compared to the main intake especially at undergraduate level. Orientation programs, accommodation and student associations can differ as well due to the fact that most students join institutions during the main intake.

For students who are focused on a specific course, the question should therefore be simple: Does the January intake offer the right course at the right university? If yes, the earlier start can make sense. If not, waiting for September may be the better decision.

What to Do If You Miss the January 2027 Deadline: Realistic Next Steps

It is not necessarily the case that missing the deadline will automatically put an end to all the opportunities of getting into a January intake.

To begin with, see whether your chosen university accepts students even after the deadline passes. There are universities which don’t have any particular deadline and keep accepting students till such time that the courses get filled. For instance, NTU states that their January 2027 post graduate courses don’t have any application deadlines but the individual courses can close once they are filled.

Secondly, check whether there is another university which offers the same or a similar course. It may be helpful to apply here if you think that the primary goal is to begin the program as soon as possible.

Thirdly, choose another country. In case there is a January intake in Dubai when UK or Ireland options have closed, then you may consider choosing Dubai. The February intake of New Zealand may also provide you with another option, depending on the course.

Lastly, if you have missed the deadline and there is no possibility of completing the process safely, you should go in for the September 2027 intake.

How Fateh Education Helps You Fast-Track a Late Application

A late application needs quick decisions, but speed should not come at the cost of choosing the wrong course or missing an important visa requirement.

Fateh Education can help students shortlist available January and February 2027 courses, check university deadlines and organise the application around the remaining time. This can be particularly useful when a student has already missed one deadline and needs to find realistic alternatives quickly.

The process can include reviewing the student’s academic profile, identifying suitable courses, checking intake availability and helping organise the documents needed for admission. Once an offer is received, the focus can shift to meeting conditions, completing financial documentation and preparing for the relevant student visa process.

For students applying from India, the aim should not simply be to “get an offer quickly.” The course should make sense academically and financially, and there should be enough time between admission and travel to complete the visa process properly.

A fast application is useful only when it is also a well-planned application.

Conclusion

January 2027 intake can also serve as a viable option for those students who would not like to wait till the next major September intake. However, there will be differences in deadlines in the UK, Ireland, Dubai and New Zealand, and even between universities within one country.

In the UK, the January intake is widely available especially at postgraduate level where many universities like Northumbria and Nottingham Trent currently offer January 2027 intake option. In Ireland, selected January programmes are offered rather than universal university intake. Dubai offers many early year intakes while the major early year university intake in New Zealand is referred to as Semester 1 and takes place in February.

The first thing you need to do is to act early. If the deadline for your chosen January intake has expired, try late applications, alternative universities and February intake before considering September 2027 intake. If nothing works, you have enough time for preparing a strong application without being stressed with admissions or visa process.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

There are no common deadlines for courses beginning in January 2027 throughout the UK. Universities have different closing dates, which vary from course to course. For instance, Northumbria University has specified 30 November 2026 as the closing date for January 2027 Postgraduate Courses, and the University of Portsmouth specifies 30 November 2026 as the closing date for the new application by Indians for January 2027 Portsmouth Campus intake courses. Some universities, including Nottingham Trent University, do not have any specific deadlines.

The answer to your question is yes, some Irish universities offer January 2027 admissions for foreign applicants. Currently, TU Dublin offers January 2027 admissions for certain programmes, and the University of Galway offers admissions in January 2027 for MSc International Accounting and Analytics – Pathway B. But keep in mind that January intakes depend on the programme offered by universities; not the whole university offers January intake.

The actual intake month is irrelevant in determining the period after studies. This will depend on the immigration laws of the country as well as your qualifications and eligibility. Under the Third Level Graduate Programme, an eligible candidate with a qualification at Level 9 or above in Ireland is entitled to a maximum stay of 24 months, subject to the conditions of the programme. In the UK, on the other hand, a Graduate visa stays two years but becomes 18 months for applications on or after 1 January 2027, while a PhD graduate continues to enjoy three years.

For New Zealand, a completely different approach is employed. The Post Study Work Visa for a maximum of three years based on the qualification, with master’s and doctoral graduates eligible for three years when all study conditions are satisfied.

Applying in January will not necessarily lower your admission probability. But there are always less programs and positions in January than in the main admission term. Scholarships may also vary depending on the term you apply, some scholarships being valid for either September admissions or main study period.

The right way is to see the scholarship information of the specific university and admissions term rather than assuming that the September scholarship is available in January as well.

Check whether the university admits late applications. While some universities admit applicants until places are filled, others are strict about their deadlines. In case your choice course is already closed at the time of applying, try to find a university that offers the same course in January/February 2027.

Other options may include considering other destinations and courses available in September 2027. Never jump on any course that doesn’t match your educational qualification just because its deadline is still open.

January/early year intake is not nearly as widespread as the primary fall intake. This type of intake is more frequent among selected master's, business, management, computing, and professional programs. Some bachelor's programs do not even offer a January intake.

A case in point illustrating why students should be careful about both dates and terms used is New Zealand. In most universities, the primary early year intake is described as Semester 1 intake that begins in February instead of January. For example, Semester 1 2027 intake of the University of Otago starts in February.

It is ideal for you to have several weeks after accepting your final offer, meeting any necessary tuition payment, submitting a visa application, and traveling. It depends on the specific country.

For the UK, the applicant outside the country may apply for a Student visa six months prior to the start date of the course, and it takes about three weeks to be processed.

For Ireland, the applicant may apply for the long-stay study visa three months prior to the date of travel.

In New Zealand, it is highly recommended that the international student applies for the Student Visa three months prior to the date of travel; however, it is particularly important for applicants coming from India and other high-volume countries.

For the January/February 2027 start, thus, the best option for you would be to complete the university application process as early as possible.
