So, if you are planning to study at an acclaimed UK university, the University of Greenwich can top your list. It is centrally located in London, is highly ranked and well organised into four faculties that offer a range of competent and industry-oriented courses.
About the University
Beginnings matter because they represent the strength of the foundation, as is the case with the University of Greenwich. The university started its operations as Woolwich Polytechnic, which was the second UK polytechnic in 1890. Further, it united with Hammersmith College of Art and Building in 1969 to eventually form Thames Polytechnic in 1970. Later on, with the incorporation of Dartford College, Avery Hill College incorporated and Garnett College over the years, it finally came to be known as the University of Greenwich in 1992. This pressing history marks its more than a century-old expertise and zeal to grow alongside the tide.
Presently, the three main campuses of Greenwich are purposefully built in accessible and strategic locations. Firstly, the historic home campus Greenwich Old Royal Naval College is a royal site on the bank of the River Thames. It is this campus that can be seen in some of the iconic movies. Further, in its close proximity there stands the purpose-built green campus, Avery Hill. This campus is unique for its student village, sports facilities and relaxed atmosphere. Lastly, at the Chatham dockside in Kent stands the enticing Medway Campus, which also houses great laboratory facilities, organises consistent workshops and offers the opportunity to explore the countryside and seaside towns.
Moreover, they have organised their programmes into four major faculties which include Faculty of Liberal Arts and Science, Business School, Faculty of Education and Health and Faculty of Engineering and Science. These faculties offer various specialised degrees and are consistent in doing research on the world’s most challenging issues and making discoveries while prioritising innovation and change. These flexible degree programmes hold the vision of industry experts and use the latest research-informed curricula. Further, the outcome-based, experiential and technologically driven teaching adds to the overall learning experience that the institution aims to provide. It is this remarkable influence of avant-garde amenities and mentorship of competent and qualified teaching staff that has resulted in around 38,000 students from more than 170 countries, getting support from Greenwich through their Digital Student Centre and an ambitious community.
Mission and Values
It is important to note that, one’s vision and mission in life define their dependability. In accordance, Greenwich University’s fundamental value is to empower not just students, but everyone associated with them to explore and break the boundaries of conventional wisdom and fragmented boundaries. It is this approach that leads to discoveries and allows cultural and demographical connections between communities to come together under one roof. It is the language of possibilities that the institution teaches, which makes the overall learning experience an exploration of self.
Further, the correspondence of inclusive policies and equality objectives of Greenwich marks its commitment towards the community. One of the university’s missions is to be known in the top 50 universities nationally for their commitment towards equality and diversity. Along with that, Greenwich University aims to be an all-in-one space by providing everything from teaching and sports to social and living spaces on campus, and their £150 million investment in infrastructure, teaching aid and various other student facilities is the pathway towards this aim.
Campus Life
A campus is a student’s home during their course duration, it is at this place that they don’t just learn, but make friends, brainstorm ideas, find inspiration and spend most of their time. So, the University of Greenwich has thoughtfully designed all its campuses by incorporating every required amenity and considering student’s every need.
Firstly, there are support services, wherein every student can connect with their personal tutor for guidance and counselling. This tutor may guide the student towards Academic Services that deal with all the nitty-gritty of student life from accommodation to inclusion. Additionally, the Student Wellbeing hub handles all the healthcare concerns, whether it is providing confidential one-to-one counselling for mental health or initiatives like STAART to assist students with disability and long-term health conditions. Further, as the campus is a social space, the freshman can find their place in the Greenwich Community with the assistance of the Greenwich Students’ Union.
Secondly, if we consider some of the major infrastructural resources, these include an 8,000m2 state-of-the-art laboratory and The Drill Hall Library with more than 150,000 books and 400 computers in Medway Campus. Further, the Dreadnought Building at Greenwich has been newly reopened with a café, restaurant, gymnasium and concert venue. These facilities are present in conjunction with basic teaching and computing spaces, thus offering students an all-inclusive experience. However, it is to be noted that every campus is tech-friendly and has exclusive teaching and sporting facilities, along with student accommodations.
Lastly, Greenwich’s Accommodation services have given thousands of students not just shelter but a home away from home. Currently, there are multiple options ranging from en-suite rooms to shared facilities, which come with the assurance of safety, comfort and a conducive learning environment. This facility is comparatively economical and convenient in terms of commuting, as there is a free bus service provided by Greenwich which runs between campuses.
Conclusively, there is everything that a scholar can hope for, whether you want to do some social learning, be a part of a range of student activities or just want to immerse in your books.
