About University College London (UCL)

University College London (UCL) has been an accommodating and innovative institution since its beginning and is, therefore, one of the first of its kind. The Royal Charter granted to UCL in 2005 gave it official recognition as one of the top universities in Britain.

UCL continues to lead the way with many innovations; for example, it was the first to perform surgery under anaesthesia and the first to successfully launch a British scientific rocket. The first Nobel Prize given to a British scientist was to UCL’s Professor William Ramsay in the 1890s after he discovered all five noble gases (including neon). UCL has been awarded 33 Nobel Prizes to date and continues to maintain this legacy of excellence.

The university’s distinguished alumni include Olympic Champion Christine Ohuruogu, acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan (known for Interstellar, Oppenheimer, The Dark Knight, and Inception), producer Emma Thomas, and Rachel Whiteread, who became the first woman to receive the Turner Prize in 1993.
