About the University
The existence of the acclaimed De Montfort University (DMU) dates back to 1870 when it first came into existence as the Leicester School of Art. Afterwards, it transitioned through various iterations of Leicester Colleges of Art and Technology and Leicester Polytechnic. Finally, on 26 June 1992, the today-known DMU gained official recognition.
Since then, the institution has only looked ahead and has walked hand in hand with the growth and development that the world has been going through. Whether it is having a campus with not just research laboratories and creative technology studios but with cafes, study spaces, libraries and more. The campus is designed around the needs of the students and is inclusive with policies of sustainability and equality in place.
In terms of faculties and departments at DMU, each segment is designed to be mindful of today’s trend-setting fields and their foundational requirements. Altogether, they have around five research institutes that are further divided into categories as per a specialised domain. This mission is marked by the theme of Equality for all, digital transformation and financial strength and a remarkable initiative of DMU Engage. This leads to a Campus Collectiveness that results in rich networking, professional collaborations and co-creation.
Moving forth, their value statement is as futuristic as their mission, because it is the support and compassion that they pride themselves on, which means exploring possibilities, moving beyond the confines of conventional barriers and rethinking tomorrow. The recent extension has led to The Yard, adding extra space of more than 22,000 square metres, which also consists of airy spaces, a Student Advice Centre and a balcony. Nonetheless, there are more iconic buildings on the campus such as The Vijay Patel Building, The Edith Murphy House, The Queens Building and The Campus Centre. Each of these architectural marvels houses a different faculty and has specific features of its own.
Alongside that, the extracurricular significance is attributed to DMU’s QEII Leisure Centre, which has a 25-metre swimming pool, dance and fitness studio, eight-court sports hall and more. Further, the DMU Sport and the DMU Rowing Club are situated in The Watershed, this space offers students a chance to indulge in several sports and societal activities. So, whether it is physical or mental well-being, DMU has invested in everything.
